Marion Jenkins et Paul Sodtke
Marion Jenkins and Paul Sodtke

Melba Jenkins
Melba Ruth JENKINS
After a long battle with cancer, Melba Jenkins (Wise) passed away in the comfort of her own home in Prince Albert on Monday March 22, 2010. Melba had been supported by her husband, daughter, son and many close relatives and friends over the past several years as she fought this disease. She was born in Oxley, MO. on August 30, 1941 to Robert and Earlene Wise. Melba had lived in Canada in three great provinces since 1967. She was proud to call Canada her country and Prince Albert her home and this is where she found a warm and caring community that welcomed her with open arms. She gave of herself generously and touched the lives of many, participating over the years in numerous community organizations and initiatives. In her modest elegance and her quiet grace, and with a disarming humour, Melba devotedly served her adopted home of Prince Albert for more than 20 years. In addition to the leadership and generous contributions gifted by her and Malcolm toward the creation of the E.A. Rawlinson Centre for the Arts, the Kinsmen Skateboard Park, the Performing Arts Warehouse, the Broadway North Theatre Company and, most recently, the Alfred Jenkins Field House, Melba served, even through her health challenges in recent years, as an active director and leading donor of the Victoria Hospital Foundation, and as a dedicated volunteer through the IODE. She is remembered in admiration for her moving testimony as a keynote speaker to Prince Albert’s Relay for Life in support of cancer research. The Lieutenant Governor in 2005 presented Melba with the Saskatchewan Centennial Medal. In 2008, she was honoured by the community she has so meaningfully embraced by her induction into the Prince Albert Council of Women’s Hall of Fame. She will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by her husband, Malcolm Jenkins; her daughter, Karen Jenkins of Prince Albert, SK; her son Matthew Jenkins and his family (Fabiola de Pina, Marina and Tiago) of Edmonton, AB; her brother Alvin Wise and family (Mary, Nora, Mike and James) of Cunningham, KY; her sister Shirley Opitz and family (Joseph, Robert and Stacey) of Assumption, IL; Malcolm's sister Jean Miller and family (Keith, Amanda, Diana and John) of Myrtle Beach, SC and she will also be missed by two very special cats, Singh and Songh. The family wishes to give special thanks to Dr. L. Egbeyemi and the amazing staff of the Victoria Hospital and to Melba's many friends that were there until the end in either body or spirit for their love and support. Those of you who have met Melba will understand what this loss means to her family, friends and community. In lieu of other tributes, memorial donations can be made to the Victoria Hospital Foundation. A Memorial Celebration will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 3, 2010 at the Rawlinson Centre, 142 – 12th Street West, Prince Albert, SK.
