Colbert,James et Olive Légaré
creton a écrit:Bonjour,

Notes
bn1 The Belfast Newsletter, 15 Sep 1772, p. 3 A number of ship passengers recently arrived in Charleston, [presumably in South Carolina], including Robert CULBERT, placed their names on a letter and had it published in Ireland. The text of this letter follows:
"CHARLESTOWN, July 18, 1772"
"SIR, WE whose Names are hereunto subscribed, in Point of gratitude, think ourselves under the highest Obligations to Capt. Robert SHUTER, for the kind and tender Usage we received from him during our Passage to this Town, which was nine Weeks and one Day: Sir, you may believe us that it is not in our Power to express or set forth his Character according to his good treatment; we are fully persuaded it would surprise you had you been Witness to the tender and humane Care he took of every person on board: We thank God we had little or no Sickness on board; there was(sic) only three Children died during the Passage, and as many born; and if either Man, Woman or child happened to be disordered, he was still really with his Cordials, of which he was very well supplied; therefore to do Justice to his Character, and for the Good of our Friends and Countrymen as may chuse(sic) to come to this Place, we therefore beg you may send this to Mr. JOY, in order to have it published."

(A history of the parish of Cloughjordan with an emphasis on education from the hedge schools to the present day.) [Note: Stonyacre is shown on Discovery map 59, approx. 1 mile east of Cloughjordan, off the road to Moneygall.] What follows is taken from the book:
"In the early part of the 19th century there was an outflow of people from the area [Cloughjordan, County Tipperary, Ireland], not due to hunger or poverty, but because of an opportunity that was offered to them to settle in the new world. In 1818 Richard TALBOT sailed for Canada with about 160 people, the majority of whom were members of the Church of Ireland, and after a terrible sea voyage that lasted almost two months they travelled by ox-cart to a little community in the wilderness called London, Ontario, halfway between Toronto and Detroit, two great cities now which were then only villages. The families included: FITZGERALDs, HOWARDs, DAGGs, TALBOTs, GEARYs, POWELLs, STANLEYs, HODGINs, REMINGTONs, ATKINSONs and ARMITAGEs. Each family received a grant of 100 acres of land, on which they cleared the forest, built their homes, schools, churches and developed the roads. In later years others followed and settled nearby, including a Mrs. SHOEBOTTOM of Stoneyacre, her son John and his wife Rebecca CULBERT of Burntwood, Thomas CULBERT and his wife Kate MOONEY of Cappakilleen. Many of their descendants are still in the same region. Catholic families who settled in the area were: CARROLLs, RYDERs, MCLOUGHLINs, POWERs, MCILHARDYs and others whose last resting place was St. Patrick's Cemetery near Lucan, Ontario."
