STRAUB - Lydia (Lee) Straub died at 103 in Saskatoon on Oct 13, 2011 after a brief illness. She was born Sept 14, 1908 on a farm near Davin, SK and as a child lived briefly in Regina before moving with her family to a homestead north of Hodgeville. There she attended Vickers country school and mastered the many skills of a farm woman. In 1937 she married George Straub and moved to his farm nearby. Together they started their family, cared for his invalid mother, and confronted the challenges of drought and depression on the prairies. They moved to Shaunavon in 1950, where Lee devoted herself to providing a healthy and happy home for her family, supporting her church, and nurturing relationships with friends and far-flung nieces, nephews and cousins. She shared with George a love of fishing the trout streams and lakes of the southwest and the mountains. She could hold her own at scrabble, and wipe out the opposition playing crokinole. They retired into Swift Current, and after George died there, Lee chose to move to Saskatoon where she became well known in her new home in Scott-Forget. Her capacity to enjoy life and make friends continued through her tenth decade; she still rode the Ferris wheel at the Saskatoon Ex at 101. Home Care enabled her to remain in her apartment until she was over 102. But when her care needs increased she moved to Marg’s Care Home, where she joked with her new neighbours, sang all the old songs, and carried on “one day at a time.” Lee is survived by daughters Georgia (Joe) Jacques and Joan Feather (and friend Don Torrie) and son Peter, grandsons Michael and David (Teresa) Straub, great-grandsons Carson and Conner Straub, sister Frieda Jacobs, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband George, son-in-law Jim Feather and daughter-in-law Val Straub, parents Peter and Maria Brandt, brothers Erich, Herold and Fred, and sisters Anna Brandt and Henriette Hyndman. Family will gather at a future date to celebrate her life. Arrangements are entrusted to Martens Warman Funeral Home.
