Born in Saint John, New Brunswick January 18th, 1914 he was the only son of Ethel and Frank Storey. Predeceased by his sister Frances, cherished grandchildren Jared and Jane and great-grandson Michael, Don is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Margaret (nee McBeath), his sister, Eleanor Hastie of Bridgewater, N.S., six children, Thomas (Sally), John (Elisabeth), Susan, Jamie (Catherine), Brian and Peter, twenty six grandchildren and great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Educated at Aberdeen High School, Mount Allison University, Dalhousie University and UNB Law School, Don practiced law in Moncton, served as Moncton City Solicitor and as Legal Counsel with the Government of Canada, Department of Unemployment Insurance. Don made significant contribution to many community organizations over the years including the Royal Canadian Legion, Zetland Masonic Lodge, Moncton Sea Cadets, Shediac Bay Yacht Club and was a diligent and enthusiastic member of the choir at Trinity United Church in Shediac. During his five years of service in World War II, Lieutenant-Commander Storey proudly served Canada in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve aboard the minesweeper H.M.C.S. Rosthern, and as Commanding Officer of H.M.C.S. Stratford and H.M.C.S. Arvida. His naval service was honoured and “Mentioned in Dispatches” thus, "This Officer has served for three years of war in escort vessels engaged in the Battle of the Atlantic. By his zeal, cheerfulness, and wholehearted devotion to duty he has set a fine example to those working under him." These words provide an apt description for his entire life and we are grateful for the fine example he set for our family. We are grateful that first and foremost, Don was a family man and his greatest concern was for the welfare and happiness of each and every member of the expanding Storey clan. We remember him as a devoted husband and incurable romantic whose abiding love and consideration for Peg was ever present. We remember with pride his love of Country and valiant service; a true “Heart of Oak”. We remember him with respect as a gentleman of honour and decency who always looked for the best in others and who was slow to anger and quick to forgive. We remember and value how he lived his life as an engaged, active, and positive role model in the community especially to disadvantaged youth and the countless others he introduced to sailing aboard his beloved sailboat “West in the Morning.” We will be ever grateful for the joyful legacy of sailing which lives on in his children and grandchildren and through them to future generations. We remember and were amazed at his ability to face life’s vicissitudes with acceptance, unending optimism and humor. We remember with admiration his single-minded determination to maintain his independence and positivity in his later years. Don lived a life marked by love, service, hospitality and generosity and to follow his example the family have endowed the Storey Youth Sailing Foundation to allow disadvantaged youth to attend SBYC Sailing School and discover the value of sailing as sport, personal challenge, teamwork and therapy. The family would like to thank those who provided such wonderful care during Don’s last days allowing him to pass peacefully at home especially the Shediac Extramural nurses of Vitalité Health Network, Caregiver Veronica Leblanc, and Dr Elaine Landry.
Funeral arrangements entrusted to Frenette’s Funeral Center, 396 Main Street Shediac, NB where visitation will take place at 2:00pm to 5:00pm this Saturday, July 20th 2013. A Memorial Service celebrating Don’s life will be held at Trinity United Church, Main Street, Shediac, NB on this Sunday, July 21st, 2013 at 2:30 pm, Rev. Roland Hutchinson officiating, with reception to follow in the church hall. Flowers are gratefully declined. A donation to the Storey Youth Sailing Foundation or charity of the donor’s choice is much appreciated.
